Building an outdoor living space in Florida means choosing materials that can handle intense UV rays, daily humidity, salt air along the coast, and heavy summer rain. The wrong materials fade, warp, crack, or corrode within a few years. The right ones look great for a decade or more with minimal upkeep. Here is what works best for outdoor living projects in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, and the rest of Southwest Florida.
Decking Materials: Composite vs. Wood vs. Pavers
Pressure-treated pine is the cheapest decking option, but in Florida’s climate it warps, splinters, and requires staining every one to two years. Tropical hardwoods like ipe hold up much better but come at a premium price and still need annual oiling.
Composite decking from brands like Trex or TimberTech offers the best balance of durability and low maintenance in our climate. Modern composites resist fading, mold, and moisture damage. They do get hot underfoot in direct sun, so lighter colors are a better choice for areas without shade. For ground-level patios, concrete pavers or travertine remain excellent options — they stay cooler, drain well, and last for decades.
Outdoor Kitchen Countertops
Granite and quartz are popular indoor countertop materials, but outdoors in Florida, your best options are different. Granite works outdoors if properly sealed, though it requires re-sealing annually. Concrete countertops can be custom-poured to any shape and sealed for weather resistance. For the most durable option, consider porcelain slab countertops — they resist UV fading, heat, staining, and moisture without any sealing.
Structural Framing: Aluminum Wins
Wood framing for pergolas and outdoor kitchens looks great on day one but deteriorates quickly in Florida unless you use treated or naturally resistant species. Aluminum framing is the top choice for outdoor structures in our region. It will not rust, rot, warp, or attract termites. Powder-coated aluminum holds its color against UV exposure and requires nothing more than occasional cleaning. For a warmer look, aluminum pergolas with faux-wood grain finishes give you the appearance of wood without the maintenance.
Roofing and Shade Structures
If your outdoor living area includes a roof, standing seam metal panels in aluminum or galvalume steel offer the best longevity. They shed rain quickly, resist high winds, and reflect heat. For open shade, consider retractable awnings with Sunbrella fabric rated for outdoor use. Avoid fabric that is not UV-stabilized — it will fade and weaken within a single Florida summer.
Screens and Enclosures
Screen enclosures are nearly universal in Southwest Florida for good reason — they keep out mosquitoes and no-see-ums while still letting the breeze through. For framing, extruded aluminum is standard. For screening, fiberglass mesh is the most affordable option while Super Screen or Tuff Screen offer better visibility and more resistance to tears. If you are near the coast, ask about corrosion-resistant hardware and fasteners.
Flooring Under Covered Patios
- Travertine pavers: naturally cool, slip-resistant, salt-tolerant
- Stamped concrete: affordable and customizable but may crack over time
- Brick pavers: classic look, good drainage, heat-resistant
- Porcelain tile (outdoor-rated): low maintenance, wide style range
Hardware and Fasteners
This is an area many homeowners overlook. Standard steel screws and brackets will rust within months in coastal Florida. Use stainless steel (316 grade near the coast) or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners for all outdoor construction. This small upgrade prevents staining, structural weakening, and costly replacements later.
